Yoko-kan Garden, a house built based on shoin-zukuri style and a beautiful kaiyu style Japanese Garden

Yoko-kan Garden has a large pond in the center where you can enjoy boat riding and a house with shoin-zukuri architecture which is a classical style of Japanese homes. It was built as a second house of the Matsudaira Family but was burned down by air raids in World War II. After 8 years of construction, it was rebuilt. Osagoe Minka-en

Osagoe Minka-en: old houses of wealthy farmers

6 old houses, including the houses of wealthy farmers built around the 18th century and those of land lords were transferred here. Furniture and house utensils displayed here will tell you how they lived in those days. The spacious culture park with a stream and a fountain will surely relax you.

Take the Keifuku Bus on Nishi-tanaka Shukudo-sen Line. Get off at Osagoe Minka-en and walk 5 min.

Eihei-ji Temple: Solemn air among monks training

Eihei-ji Temple was founded by Dougen in 1244 as a Zen monastery. Seven cathedrals such as Butsu-den, Ho-do, are connected by corridors in the site 330,000 square meters. About 1,500,000 people visit here annually. 200 monks are devoting themselves to Zen training. There is something really solemn here.

Maruoka-jo Castle, the oldest style of the castle

A castle built on a hill in 1576 by Katsutoyo, a nephew of Shibata Katsuie. It has one of the oldest existing donjons and is a national treasure. Though the donjon is not so large, its tiled roof made of stone is quite rare and unique, showing the rustic atmosphere of the age of the civil wars (1467 - 1568). According to legend, the mist once protected the castle during a battle, thus the castle is called Kasumiga-jo (the castle in the mist) which is now in the park called Kasumiga-jo Park. There are about 500 Yoshino cherry blossom trees planted in the park and they are really beautiful in spring.

Senko-no-ie, a gorgeous house of the Tsubokawa family, a powerful local family

Senko-no-ie was the residence of a powerful local family, the Tsubokawa's, and was built around the 17th century. It is a national treasure and the oldest house in Fukui prefecture, which shows you the gorgeous life of a powerful family in the medieval era.

20-min. bus ride from Hon-maruoka (the bus stop) to Takeda by Maruoka Bus. Get off at the terminal.

The ruins of the Asakura family in Ichijo-dani, recalling the glory of the Asakura family to our minds

The ruins of the castle town which had been ruled by the shugo-daimyo(feudal lord), the Asakura family for a long time. The remains of the main building were excavated almost intact and its vicinity is a national historic spot. It brings to our minds the glory of the Asakura family to see the ruins of the residence of Asakura Yoshikage, where he administered the affairs of clan, the Yudono-ato (the ruins of the bath room) Garden, and the 200-meter street with rows of restored historic houses.
