Miyata Harumi
the Chairman of the Hakuba Village Olympics Cultural Events Meeting festival

Miyata Harumi is involved with many activities and is responsible not only as a chairman of the Hakuba Village Olympics Cultural Events Meeting, but as chairman of the Hakuba Snow Festival Committee, Chairman of the Hakuba Hand-made Noodles Committee, and the list goes on. His commitment to so many different activities shows that he is enthusiastic about promoting his hometown. Mr. Miyata, president of a company that design and implements electric equipment, spends six months a year on those local activities.
"The villagers live on the ski industry since there is no other special interests here", he says modestly. Being a chairman of the Snow Festival, he tries to encourage everyone to appreciate the snow. As chairman of the Sabo Festival, Mr. Miyata takes children to the river to clean up the garbage and to release the fish called miller's thumb. All these activities are to campaign for the preservation of clean water and unpolluted air that are the treasures of Hakuba Village.
Mr. Miyata says that he wants to share his affection and appreciation of nature with other people through various activities. Talking about the Nagano Olympics, he comments that "This is a great opportunity to introduce Hakuba's beautiful nature and the heart-warming hospitality of the local people to everybody not only in Japan, but in the world. The success of the Olympics depends on the teamwork of the residents. Therefore, the things we have built up are very important. When we need volunteer workers for events, for example, a number of experienced volunteers who have participated in those activities come forward to seek positions. I also hope the Olympics will help develop people's volunteer spirit".

He is currently planning some entertainment for Olympic visitors. "Since it is expected that there would be a big jam of spectators who are ready to leave the site after each competition, we would like to provide some entertainment for those people while they are waiting. We are hoping to come up with something that would also help to promote our village. This is the most challenging subject for now", Mr. Miyata says somewhat amusingly.
