The Salt Road, A Search for History

The Salt Road was the main route for carrying traded goods between the sea and land. Walking through Chikuni Road, one can visit a number of beautiful stone statues of Buddha. Some were built to worship those who died on the road, and the others were to defeat epidemics, evils, and robbers, as well as to rid of wind damage and disease. One can feel the villagers' warmth to wish for travellers safety.

15 min. taxi ride from Hakuba Station. Get off at Sanosaka Sanjusanban Kannon and walk according to your energy level.

白馬大雪渓

Shirouma the Great Snowy Valley, Natural Air Conditioner in Summer

It is one of the three greatest snowy valleys in Japan. Its scale (100 meters wide, 3,500 meters long, and 600 meters above sea level) is really breathtaking. Proper equipment is needed for climbing the Snowy Valley, although a casual outfit for hiking would be sufficient to walk from Sarukura to the start of the valley. It is an hour-long walking path that turns into a paradise-like road of alpine plant flowers in summer.

From Hakuba Station take Matsumoto Dentetsu bus for Sarukura. Get off at the terminus (27 min. ride)
