During the Yedo period (1603 - 1867) the powerful Kaga clan ruled the Kanazawa region. The wealthy region of Kaga makes one think of an extravagant samurai lifestyle. The Tokugawa administration which governed Japan at the time did not tolerate luxury even among the upper samurai clasmen. Punishment was severe for those who were found spending too much money. The Kaga clan was creative when it came to their expenditures. In order to avoid attention, the Kaga clan put their effort into abstract forms such as Yuzen dye techniques, Kutani-yaki ceramic ware, and Wajima-nuri lacquer ware to avoid conspicuous attention. The modern day Kanazawa is a popular tourist destination, especially among women. The Hokuhoku-sen Line that began operation last year has made access easier via Echigo Yuzawa for travelers from the metropolitan area.
