The town of Matsumoto evolved around Matsumoto-jo Castle. Being the gateway to the Japan Alps as well, Matsumoto is visited by many tourists every year. Behind the main strips lined with modern buildings are historic storehouses with square-tiled walls. Hot springs such as Asama Onsen and Utsukushigahara Onsen are nearby, making the town even more attractive to visitors. Matsumoto Airport which is located in the city, serves as the gateway to the Chuo region.
There are no direct flights from the Kanto region, but the JR Chuo line has frequent connections between the two areas. The air route is the main transportation means for connection between Matsumoto and the rest of the country: Kyushu, Tohoku and Hokkaido. The July 1996 addition of new flights from Osaka's Kansai International Airport and Sendai Airport made air travel to Matsumoto even more convenient.
