Akebi vine craftsHato guruma, or pigeon on wheels is made from akebi vines picked in the neighborhood mountains. The vines are boiled, peeled, wove into the shape of a pigeon and attached to wheels for simple traditional toys. Started in the Yedo period (1600 - 1868) as a wintertime side business, various household goods such as hand baskets, flower baskets, and confectionery baskets have been crafted as well. Recent trends have shown demand for items such as lamp stand and table baskets which are better-suited to western-style rooms. These items are particularly popular among Westerners and young Japanese women. The craft has become very valuable as acquisition of wild akebi vines becomes increasingly difficult. |
