Takisan Temple Devil Festival

Takisan Temple Devil Festival

(The Nearest Saturday to January 7 of the Lunar Calendar)
This festival began as a petition to Minamoto Yoritomo for good harvest. It was stopped for a while but was restarted under the third-generation Tokugawa, Iemitsu. A procession starts from about 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service and a sword-swinging ritual to drive away the evil spirit. The climax is the chasing of the grandpa, grandma, and grandchild devil by men dressed in white underwear carrying torches inside the shrine. The shrine covered with red ashes from the torches is a extravagant sight.
