Look Back a Bit

historic lodging town

A historic lodging town with remnants from the past

Shiojiri has historically been an important passage for travelers. Being a junction where main highways crossover, Shiojiri had been the battlefield for many conflicts. The Nakasendo which runs vertically through Shiojiri has played an important role as one of the five highways frequented during the Yedo period (1603 - 1867). During the mid and late Yedo period Shiojiri Inns as well as Seba and Motoyama Inns flourished, being part of the Yedo government territory. The system of designated inn villages was abolished in 1867. The Meiji administration took over and implemented major changes in the network of highways, driving the inns out of business. The spirit of the bustling era remains in the Shiojiri air.
