Miura Tamaki was known worldwide as an opera prima donna who gave over 2000 performances portraying Madam Butterfly. The majority of her operas were performed in the U.S. before World War II. She came to love Lake Yamanaka when she took refuge here during the war, and she died shortly after (1946) at the age of 62. She is buried by the lake. Another personality who loved Lake Yamanaka was the famous prewar poet Takahama Kyoshi. Lake Yamanaka is 982 meters above sea level and spans 6.67 square km. It is the biggest of the five lakes around Mount Fuji and is the closest to that mountain. The lake is surrounded by Mount Ohhira to the north, Mount Mikuni to the east, and the Kagosaka Pass to the south. As its name (yama "mountain" and naka "in the middle of") implies, this lake is surrounded by mountains. The area, cool in summer, has been a famous summer resort since the early 19th century.
Let's follow in Tamaki's footstep and take a tour of the surroundings.
