Yamanouchi

Welcome to the ski, spa, and resort paradise

Yamanouchi-machi features three tourist spots: Shiga Kogen, Kita-Shiga Kogen, and Yudanaka Shibu Onsen Resort. With 21 ski resorts, Shiga Kogen is the largest of its kind in Japan. Having held numerous international competitions, the region will host the 1998 Olympic Snowboarding and Alpine Skiing events. Yudanaka Shibu Onsen Resort is at the entrance of Shiga Kogen.
Remains of the Yedo period (1600-1868) poet Kobayashi Issa can be seen in Yudanaka, and 9 baths in Shibu can wash away one's sorrow. Jigokudani known for the bathing monkeys is worth a visit as well. The diverse sights provide a nice variety in atmosphere. Kita-Shiga Kogen is a place to enjoy all kinds of seasonal sport activities such as ski, grass ski, golf, and tennis. Recently there have been a growing number of new hotels and B&B;'s which has given Yamanouchi a reputation for being a refined and modern resort area.
