Hiroshima makes one think of the Peace Memorial Park area, but it actually is a city of water as well. The six rivers that run through the city flow into the Seto Inland Sea, and it was with these waters that Hiroshima developed to its current state. The history of Hiroshima begins in 1589 when the warlord Mouri Terumoto founded a castle in the delta area on the banks of the Ohta River and named it Hiroshima. In 1889 the port of Ujina was built for military use but later served as a port for international trade, and in 1932 it was renamed as the port of Hiroshima. Today the city can be toured by boat cruises on the Ohta River that flows through the city center. The riverside is well maintained with plants, attracting visitors and residents who enjoy a nice stroll.
