Shoko-kan

In the archives, located at the far end of the precincts of Izumo-taisha Shrine, old maps and documents, as well as other materials related to the shrine are stored. Moreover, ancient Japanese musical instruments, picture scrolls, and poetry and drawings by Ikkyu, a monk in the fifteenth century, as well as artistic works by two prominent sculptors, Hidari Jingoro and Takamura Koun, are displayed. This tasteful, wooden building was built in the early Taisho period (1912 - 1926).
Entrance fee 50 yen/ open 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Take a Ichibata bus from Izumo-shi station, get off at Izumo-taisha (25 min.).

The Tezen Memorial

The wine (sake) cellar at the corner of the Tezen family's premises has been refurbished as a museum. Tezen is one of the big, old families, who has resided in the area for about 300 years. Izumo original ceramics such as rakusan-yaki, which enjoys fame as a masterpiece of tea ceramics, and fujina-yaki, distinctive with its yellow pigment, as well as more than 200 pieces of lacquer, metal, and wooden art crafts are displayed.

Izumo Mingei-kan (handicrafts museum)

The mansion of a prominent farmer in the Izumo area turns out to be a museum. The displays include folk crafts produced in the San-in area (west Japan), and nationally collected items which they incorporated into their everyday life. Visit the museum to rediscover the beauty of simple, function-oriented tools. The buildings which they remodeled, the rice storage and the lumber storage, are interesting.

Take a train on San-in Honsen Line from Izumo-shi station, get off at Izumo-nishi station. 5 min. walk from there.
