Mamakari is a sardine-like fish, which is caught abundantly in the Inland Sea of Japan. It has a lighter taste than sardine, and is usually prepared as pickles with vinegar or as sushi (a slice of raw fish on a bed of rice). This small silver fish is so appetizing that once you eat it, you would want more rice (mama) to go with it. This is said to be the origin of this name.
