Ohara Museum of Art

Ohara Magosaburo, president of Kurashiki Spinning Company, built the first Western museum of modern art in 1930. Magosaburo's friend and a painter as well as an art collector, Kojima Torajiro, started collecting art pieces with great support from Mr. Ohara. Later, Ohara Soichiro, a grandson of Magosaburo, added more and organized them. The exhibition in the main wing contains Western paintings and sculptures by El Greco, Renoir, Gauguin, Monet, and Picasso, and other world masters. Also there is an annex (Western style paintings and sculptures by contemporary artist), an applied fine arts complex (Ceramics by Kawai Kanjiro and Bernard Leach, prints by Munakata Shiko, dyeing by Serizawa Keisuke etc.), and an Oriental complex (Chinese and Indian antique art works). It is amazing to see their high quality as well as the quantity of pieces.
