Okayama-jo Castle was constructed under the feudal lord Ukita Naoie
In ancient times, the Kibi tribe established and developed the Bizen region (now called Okayama) into a prosperous area. Time brought the era of the Warring States, and a powerful militant by the name of Ukita Naoie surfaced. Naoie, fully aware of the changing powers as he cleverly conducted his military missions, secured his position as ruler of the region. In 1570, Naoie decided that Okayama was an ideal place for a castle town since the area was surrounded by vast plateaus and transportation was made easy by a balanced spread of land and water. Construction of the castle began in 1573, eventually bringing forth prosperity to Okayama. The castle was occupied by several different families, but the town saw its best in the 18th century under the feudal lord Ikeda Mitsumasa.
