Rhomboid leaves, the symbol of the Ouchi family, is drawn on these pieces: bowls, portable tables, trays, and tea ceremony sets. The most popular lacquer craft is the cute round Ouchi doll. This doll was originated by the 24th-generation Ouchi, Hiroyo, who ordered his doll craftsmen to make a doll to console his wife, who was homesick for Kyoto. |

Yamaguchi Hagi WareAs the old saying goes, "First Raku, then Hagi, next Karatsu". Hagi is famous for earthenware. Its shape and decoration is not very beautiful, but it is simple. Its popularity, however, seems to be due to the type of earth used: it looks warm after it is baked. Another factor is its shichibake (seven disguises), which means that it changes color over time. The Yamaguchi Hagi ware takes its root from the original Hagi ware, which is more than 100 years old. |
