Modeled after Kyoto, Yamaguchi the Kyoto of Western Japan |
This city developed under the 24th Ouchi, Hiroyo, who was tremendously influenced by the splendors of Kyoto when he visited the capital for the first time. He ruled the Yamaguchi region, formerly called Suwo and Nagato, during the Muromachi period. He likened its Ichonosaka and Fushino rivers to the Komogawa and Yodo rivers of Kyoto, respectively. He built an administrative building and residence between the two rivers. He also layed the city out in a checkerboard, just like the city of Kyoto. There still remains today old city names that imitate Kyoto, such as "Tatekoji," "Iseohji," and "Ohdonoohji." And the city retains its old flavor; the shadow of Kyoto is seen in the culture and festivals of Yamaguchi.
