Wakkanai Park
This park is located to the west of the city and has a camping ground and a plaza. Over 4000 wild cherry trees grow in the park.
The symbol of this park is the "Ice and Snow Gate" showing a bronze statue of a woman facing in the direction of Karafuto
showing her love for the home she left behind. Also in this park are the "Statue of Nine Women" who committed suicide in the
wake of the seizure of Karafuto by the Russian troops at the end of World War II, the Wakkanai Centennial Monument, the North Islands Memorial Museum. The Memorial Museum has a 360-degree revolving tower where you can enjoy the panoramic view. On a clear day
you can see the Sakhalins straight ahead, the Rishiri and Rebun Islands to the left, the Sea of Okhotsk to the right, and the Sarobetsu
Plains to the rear.
●About a 13-minute walk from Wakkanai Station, get on the ropeway and get off at the top which is the Wakkanai Park. Admission: free.

The World's Shortest(!?) Ropeway
The ropeway to the top of the hill takes only 1 minute 30 seconds. This is the shortest ropeway ride in the world. There is a
cable car at each end which runs at an interval of 10 minutes. They are named Taro and Jiro in honor of the two polar dogs.
One way fare is 180 yen.

Wakkanai Citizen's Spa Recreation Center
This spa, located on a hill overlooking the Sea of Japan, is the northern-most spa in Japan and was built in 1978. The content of
the hot spring is mostly salt and is diluted five times before it is used. It is effective in treating rheumatism, muscle contraction,
chronic eczema, and old age disease. It is popular among the locals for its aesthetic effect on the skin.

Soya Tourist Association Gift Shop
You can buy various gifts at this shop which is located on the 1st floor of the Wakkanai Tourist Center next to Wakkanai Station.
You can buy various gifts of Wakkanai and Sarobetsu in the Soya region as well as those from Rishiri and the Rebun islands.
You can buy the Tako Shabu set the famous Rishiri kelp here. You can have them delivered by overnight freight at a
nominal fee.
