A glittering cultural city
Kamakura, known now for its greenery and abundant nature, was once the birthplace of the nation's first samurai administration. This beautiful place once served as a battle ground for the Sagami warriors. Today, the temple-studded area is flooded with tourists year-round. But in the Meiji period(1862 - 1912), Kamakura became a popular retreat where prominent people built their summer homes. One step away from the main strip will lead you to a beautiful residential neighborhood with well-kept Japanese gardens. Walking towards the ocean, one can see sails of yachts and windsurfers gliding across the glittery water. The mild and balmy former capital has attracted many literati, producing numerous literary works and being host for many films. But the people who love this place the most are perhaps the residents. Kamakura has become one of the most exclusive residential districts within the metropolitan area. The locals, however, have managed to maintain the cultural tradition while staying in touch with modern ideas. This has helped Kamakura keep its dignity and charm. (Photograph: Shizuka-no-mai dance) |
