Seikei-en GardenA three-minute walk from Kumagaya station will lead you to a Japanese landscape garden situated in a shopping district. Seikei-en features Tama-no-ike Pond with its water flowing into Hoshi-kawa River. One may never imagine such a tranquil space covered with trees amidst a bustling commercial district. Seikei-en, which received many prominent visitors, was founded in the late 19th century by Takei Tanjo who also made enormous contributions to the repair of the former Kumagaya-zutsumi embankment, planting of cherry blossom trees, promotion of silk production, and founding of a private junior high school. In 1950 ownership was surrendered to the city of Kumagaya. Today, the garden is recognized as one of the city's cultural assets. Hoshi-kawa RiverHoshi-kawa, the river that runs through the city of Kumagaya, has been an oasis for the local people. Construction is being done at the moment, but nevertheless the riverbanks are perfect for strolls. The path along the river and the parapets on the bridges are adorned with statues and art objects. |
