Seikei-en Garden

A three-minute walk from Kumagaya station will lead you to a Japanese landscape garden situated in a shopping district. Seikei-en features Tama-no-ike Pond with its water flowing into Hoshi-kawa River. One may never imagine such a tranquil space covered with trees amidst a bustling commercial district. Seikei-en, which received many prominent visitors, was founded in the late 19th century by Takei Tanjo who also made enormous contributions to the repair of the former Kumagaya-zutsumi embankment, planting of cherry blossom trees, promotion of silk production, and founding of a private junior high school. In 1950 ownership was surrendered to the city of Kumagaya. Today, the garden is recognized as one of the city's cultural assets.
