Ushiku Pond has fascinated many poets and artists. The famous hometown painter Ogawa Usen (1868-1938) depicts such fantasy world creatures as the kappa (a froglike creature), a water nymph, and a mountain nymph in many of his works based on Ushiku Pond. His works are exhibited in the Mito Modern Museum.
