Kawasaki
This city by the Setagawa River was built in the Muromachi period and developed in the Yedo period as
a result of the Okage pilgrimage boom to Ise. During that period, the city which had good canal waterways, served as
the dining room to the pilgrims to Ise. This city is also known for its "Tsumairi" houses which line the street. When seen from
afar they look like an inverted blade of a hand-saw. Tsumairi houses have entrances on the side rather than on the
front, like the "Hirairi" houses.
