He is noted as a painter who used European scenery as his motif. He departed for France in 1927 after graduating from the Tokyo Art College. He studied classic and impressionist art in Europe and created his own style. He is highly acclaimed for his skill in portraying photolike images of women and of group of persons. He served as professor of art at the Art University of Tokyo from 1953 to 1971. He drew all the sketches that hang on the wall of the Akasaka Geihinkan (Royal Guest House) in Tokyo.
