An earthquake with a magnitude of 7 hit the city of Kobe at 5:45 a.m. on January 17, 1995 destroying almost one fifth of the houses almost instantaneously. The western part of Kobe was struck by a fire that completely destroyed it. Historic Western-style houses and the old Ikuta Shrine were severely damaged by the earthquake. In the Merican Park and the Port Island port areas, the ground level sank the foundations liquefied. Despite the heavy damage, the local citizens set out to clean the rubble and restore the broken cultural buildings. As a result, almost 90% of the tourist sites, restaurants, and shopping arcades have been restored. Also, the Third Kobe Road on the Hanshin Expressway has resumed service in September. Today's Kobe seems as if the whole town has revitalized and hospitality is everywhere.
