Hosokawa Fujitaka (Yusai)

Hosokawa Fujitaka was born in 1534 and died in 1610 at the age of 77. As a war-lord, he built Tanabe-jo Castle after conquering the Tango area, the old name for Maizuru region. He was also a superior poet; the only person to be initiated into secrets associating the terminology of "Kokin waka-shu" (the first Imperial collection of Japanese poems). The following episode proves how much he was appreciated for his cultural heritage by the Imperial Court. In the Sekigahara Battle, Fujitaka fought for the Eastern Forces with Tokugawa Ieyasu as chief commander. When he was besieged by the Western Forces led by Ishida Mitsunari for as long as two months, the Imperial Court, which was afraid of losing the line of passing down the secret, sent an Imperial envoy, and ordered reconciliation to both sides.
