Maizuru

Tanabe-jo

maizuru

A town representing two faces: A castle town and a naval port

One of the faces of Maizuru is as a historical castle town, which had grown with Tanabe-jo Castle built by Hosokawa Yusai, as a central feature. The other is a town as a naval port, which is relatively a new feature originated in 1901 when they started to build a naval engineering academy, a naval yard, and other related institutions in the vicinity. Walking around the town, you will find warehouses along the Takano-gawa River, which suggest the onetime success in the shipping industry, as well as the street names such as Shikishima and Hatsuse, which are named after Japanese war vessels. Those historical hints add some unique characteristics to Maizuru as not just a harbor town on the coast of the Japan Sea producing rich seafood.
