Summary of Mie Prefecture

When we think of Mie Prefecture, we immediately think of the Ise Jingu Shrine and pearls. At the time of the National Sports Festival in Mie, when a name was requested for this event, more than half the names suggested were related to Ise Jingu and pearls. It can be said that the people of Mie Prefecture think of these two as symbolizing their prefecture. Ise Jingu, with its 2000-year history, is especially famous and is a popular tourist sight. Tsu City, the capitol of Mie Prefecture, is centrally located on Ise Bay. To the southeast is Shima Peninsula, to the southwest is Kumanonada coastline, to the northwest is the Iga Basin, and to the north is North Ise--all scenic spots. Tourism is not the only industry in Mie. There are also very active commercial and industrial centers. Ise is the home of the original "Merchants of Ise," which were very active in Yedo and Osaka during the Yedo period. Yokkaichi and Suzuka also play an important industrial role in the Chukyo (Nagoya) region.
