Osaka Ranma

Ranma is a carved lattice work panel between a traditional sliding door and ceiling. It is said that the Shitenno-ji Temple, which was built in the beginning of 17th century, is where ranma was originated. The elaborate and see-through carvings are carved from a Japanese cedar tree, and simply allowed the passage of light and air into traditional Japanese houses and buildings. Ranma is not only a carved panel but also a traditional ornamentation. You will be admire the artists' amazing techniques and the spectacular traditional designs.

Osaka Karaki-sashimono

Osaka Karaki-sashimono

Karaki-sashimono is a beautiful lacquered joinery (furniture made without using screws or nails) which is made of shitan (red sandalwood) or kokutan (ebony). The joinery was first brought by envoys back from Tang (China) in Nara period (710-794). Osaka craftsmen started learning and improving these techniques. Joinery are produced mainly as ornamental shelves, cupboards, low desks and flower vase tables.

Naniwa Suzu-ki

Naniwa Suzu-ki (Tinware)

Tinware is a metallic ware with luster of white gold. Tin is good material for sake holders, tea-utensils, dishes, and flower vases because it purifies water. In a book of Yedo period paintings shows artisans working with tin. You will find that the artisans of today still use the traditional techniques.

Osaka Butsudan (Buddhist alter)

Butsudan is a Buddhist alter. The method of manufacturing Osaka Butsudan was instructed by Korean craftsmen who were invited by Prince Shotoku in the Asuka period (592-710). At the end of the 16th century, it is said that the various Buddhist alter items at Ishiyama-hongan-ji Temple, which used to be located in Osaka-jo Castle area until Osaka-jo was built, were produced in Osaka.
