Sen-no Rikyu

Sen-no Rikyu, a tea ceremony master, who fostered the Zen philosophy to accomplish an austere and refined tea ceremony school

This austere and refined tea ceremony school was initiated by Murata Juko, a monk in the late 15th century in Nara, and the tradition was passed on by Soju, his son, to wealthy merchants such as Kitamuki Dochin, Takeno Jo-ou, and Tsuda Sotatsu. Rikyu himself was also born into a wealthy family in Sakai, studied with Kitamuki, then continued his learning with Takeno later. His own philosophy, formed during the course of this discipline, was combined with the Zen training at Nanshu-ji Temple, and finally reached the depth of austerity of the tea ceremony. He was also gifted with creation of the tea ceremony room, tools, and tea sets, and it was so well known that his talent was extremely appreciated by the powerful warlords at the time, Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
