Over l200 years ago (Nara, in 742), Emperor Shomu chose Shigaraki to be the capital of Japan. On October l5 in the next year, The Emperor issued an Imperial ordinance "Decree of Construction of Great Buddah" here. It was the origin of Province of Shigaraki, the birthplace of the unglazed ceramics Shigaraki-yaki. Shigaraki-yaki had developed from ancient earthen ceramic ware Shueki and Hajiki and matured to perfection. Shigaraki-yaki is one of the six ancient earthen ware styles. According to the "Kogei Shika", a literature on arts and crafts, the Shikaraki-yaki pots, vats, mortars and other earthenware using pit kilns began around the middle of the Kamakura Period (1192〜l333). It was the start of history of Shigaraki, the province of uniquely Japanese ceramics.
