Hina-nagashi

Hina-nagashi (Floating hina-dolls down to the sea) - March 3, at Awashima-jinja Shrine

Dolls dedicated from all over the country are taken to the shore in a plain-wood boat with colorful paper cranes in it, and floated down to the sea after the chief priest of the Shinto shrine exorcises the evil spirits. Originating in the time of Empress Jingu (half-legendary empress in the late fourth - early fifth centuries), this festival rite is held with the wish to drive evil spirits out of girls.
