Ikko-Ikki, an uprising by adherents of a Buddhist sect, Ikko

During the Age of Provincial Wars, the power of Buddhist temples such as Negoro sect and Saika sect held their own spheres of influence in the Kishu district (present Wakayama Prefecture). One of the warlords, Oda Nobunaga, who was aiming at bringing the whole country under his rule, fought against such temple powers. He had a hard fight against this uprising by adherents of Ikko sect (Jodoshin-shu sect), who banded together with Ishiyama-hongan-ji temple as the central force. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who followed Nobunaga to rule over the whole country after his death, had a lot of trouble with those sects. He, however, finally conquered Kishu district, as he entirely defeated the strongholds of the sect - Negoro-ji Temple by setting a fire, Ota-jo Castle by inundating the castle and so on. Upon conquering, Hideyoshi built Wakayama-jo Castle and gave it to his younger brother, Hidenaga. This is the origin of Wakayama city, the prefectural capital. Later, Asano clan governed the domain for a while, and in 1619, Tokugawa Yoshinobu moved into the castle and became the lord there. Since then, the city developed as the castle town of one of the Tokugawa Gosanke and enjoyed its prosperity until the abolition of feudal domains in the Meiji period (1868-1912).
