Hon-aizome

Hon-aizome

Since devising it in 1870, the Mori family has been staunchly protecting its indigo dying technique. The third generation (deceased) was designated as a national cultural craftsman. He dyed the paper doors of the Imperial Palace and the wallpaper used in the tea ceremony room of the Kyoto Annex Palace. The house is now run by the fourth generation, Yoshio. The dye is taken from the indigo plant grown locally and artificial compounds are not used. The cloth dyed in Japan blue is very beautiful. His workshop is open to the public and you can hear his explanation and see the actual dying process.
