The city of Kagoshima, which was controlled by the feudal lord Shimazu, used to be one of the most prosperous castle towns in Japan. This neatly organized town spreads out with Mt.Shiroyama in the background, where Tsurumaru Castle was located. Over Kinko Bay, you can see the extending foot of Sakurajima volcano mountain, from whose top smoke arises to the sky. Kagoshima city has been a sister city of Naples Italy since 1960. In fact, Sakurajima, surrounded by the deep blue sea, and the town streets with a tropical atmosphere is often called "The Oriental Naples".
The occasional eruptions of Sakurajima symbolize unmeasured energy and the inner passion of Kagoshimanian people. There are signs of great historical figures at every corner of the town, which indicate that the city is a resourceful place to foster exceptional talents. Those figures who contributed to change the course of Japanese history include Shimazu Nariakira, Saigo Takamori, Okubo Toshimichi (See Look Back a Bit), and Togo Heihachiro.
