Beedoro

Beedoro

The technology of beedoro, meaning glass in Portuguese, was brought to Japan by the Jesuit missionaries in the 16th century. They presented glassware, telescopes, and other exotic goods to Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi to gain their favor. The charm of beedoro soon drew the heart of the Japanese people. In the 17th century, Japanese craftsmen began to make these products after being taught the processing method from their Portuguese masters. People called these everyday goods Nagasaki beedoros and praised their value highly. The Nagasaki Beedoro Museum contains a collection of these beedoros as well as Venetian glassware, Bohemian glassware, and English glassware. You can also buy original glassware here.

The technique was handed down through the generations within the Ogawa family. Koga dolls are known for their bright color and variety such as a captain firing a pistol, an Acha-san holding a fighting cock, and figures of European woman.
