Pehron Boat Race

Pehron Boat Race
(the last Sunday of July)

This boat race is very old and was started by the Chinese of the Tang dynasty who settled in Nagasaki three hundred years ago. Today long local boats called pehron are used in place of Chinese boats. They are rowed by 33 young men to the rhythm of a drum and gong. The Nagasaki Pehron race is held on the last Sunday of July at Matsugae International Pier.

Shoroh Float Festival
(August 15)

During the Bon season, the time of the year when the spirits return to their homes, the cemeteries of Nagasaki are lit by paper lanterns. The sight of these lanterns dotting the hillside of Nagasaki at night is beautiful. On the last day of the festival, the family makes a small lantern boat and loads it with gifts for the departing spirits. In the evening these boats are drifted out to sea to the toll of bells, the cry "Dooi.. doi" by the family members, and the shooting of fireworks.

Nagasaki Kunchi Festival

Nagasaki Kunchi Festival
(October 7-9)

After the banning of Christianity in Nagasaki, the Suwa Shrine became its new guardian god in place of Jesus Christ. The festival has a history of 350 years and is called Okunchi (meaning September 9), because it was held on September 9 of the old calendar. This festival is popular among the Nagasaki-ites, who love festivals, and attracts many tourists as well. The dragon dance, Kokkodesho, and the Dutch Hurrah dances fill the streets.
