The Former Glover ResidenceThis building was the residence of the Englishman Thomas Glover and is the oldest wooden Western-style building in Japan. This four-clover-shaped colonial building is very exotic and is designated as a national cultural property. Glover was an ardent supporter of the Meiji loyalists and he hid them in his attic from the bakufu samurai during the Restoration period. He contributed greatly to the development of Japan and Ito Hirofumi, the famous loyalist, was able to study in England due to Glover's recommendations. |
The Former Ringer ResidenceThis building was the residence of the Englishman Frederick Ringer and was used by his descendants until 1940. The stone-walled southern European-style building is very rare in Japan. The stones used on the veranda were brought from Vladivostok, Russia. The building has a solemn yet glamorous atmosphere and is reminiscent of Nagasaki during the Meiji period. |

The bridges spanning the river include the Momotani Bridge, a small but unique bridge built in 1679 by a Buddhist monk, the arch bridges Amigasa Bridge and Furumachi Bridge, Ichiran Bridge, Susukihara Bridge, and Megane Bridge. The semicircular Megane Bridge, built in 1634 by a Buddhist monk of the Koufukuji Temple, is the oldest bridge in Japan. The bridge was so named because it resembles a pair of spectacles, megane when seen from afar. The Fukuro Bridge has stairs going down to the water. There are many antique shops along the Nakajima River, and antique fans should not miss the opportunity to look into these shops.
