Chanpon (Mixed Chinese Noodles)This dish was created by a homesick overseas Chinese who felt the need for a voluminous, cheap, and tasty dish to remind him of his homeland. This dish was first served in 1889 at the Shikairo ("Four Seas") Chinese Restaurant by the proprietor of the restaurant to overseas Chinese customers and students studying in Japan. Chanpon is so well known now that it is synonymous with Nagasaki. The restaurant is always crowded with locals and tourists. ●Shikairo――10 minutes by streetcar from Nagasaki Station. |
The Castilla CakeThis cake, made of flour, egg, sugar and, gluten candy, is said to have been introduced by the Portuguese. The word is said to have derived from the Portuguese catorabol, which then became kasutera ("castilla"). The founder of the Fukusaya shop is said to have learned the recipe and the method of making kasutera from a Portuguese in 1624. This cake is still being made according to the original method, where one person does everything from egg cracking to baking. Inside the shop you can see a collection of beedoro (glassware). ●Fukusaya――15 minutes by streetcar from Nagasaki Station. |
