In the ancient past, the Takachiho Basin was completely covered with lava that poured from Mt. Aso's volcanic activity. The lava cooled and hardened, eventually forming a v-shaped dip that eroded into the Gokase River.
This natural formation of beauty is the current Takachiho-kyo Gorge which displays ladder-patterned cliffs, rock-cleansing waterfalls, and the emerald pool reflecting the bright sun. At the bottom of the crystal clear water river fish can be seen swimming. Wild cherry tree blossoms and azalea in the spring, the deep green in the summer, and the crimson leaves in autumn add vivid colors to the scenery. Row boats are recommended to those who wish to get a very close look at the beautiful gorge. Rowing in the cool air and the splashes from the fall, one can only sigh at the continuous display of nature's magnificent creations.
