With "large catch" banners hanging throughout the harbor, Hachinohe is the prefecture's number one place for eating and drinkingLocated along the Pacific Ocean and off the coast of Sanriku with its plentiful fish, Hachinohe is known as one of the nation's best places for the fishing industry. The area's catch constantly hits one of the nation's highest in volume, and thus the port is an important source for Japan. Among the loaded seafood, the volume of squid is the highest in the country, taking up 30 percent of Japan's catch. Hachinohe, with its active seafood processing industry, boasts its refrigerating and freezing facilities that are considered Asia's best. The fish market is lively with dancing fish right off the boat and the energetic calls of the vendors. Typical of a fishing town, fresh seafood, pickled squid, and sea urchin paste line the morning market. It is said that Hachinohe has the most bars in the prefecture that serve fish as picking food. |
