Enburi (February 17 - 20, throughout the town)

Enburi is a festival held in the city and neighboring farming towns of Hachinohe to pray for a bountiful harvest. Long ago, people with no knowledge about farming were taught how to work the fields through a dance with a farming tool called eburi. The word eventually changed to enburi which is now a festival featuring a parade of 15 - 20 people made up of 3 or 5 dancers and a singer accompanied by wooden flutes, drums and bells. After this festival, the town finally bids farewell to the long winter as spring makes its way into the region.

Hachinohe Sansha Taisai (July 31 - August 3, throughout the town)

A large-scale festival held by three shines: Ogami Jinja, Shinra Jinja, and Shinmeigu. Their bright floats are perhaps the most extravagant ornaments in Japan. The floats are adorned with doll ornaments of myths, legends, kabuki theater, and children's tales. Over 20 of these majestic displays parade through the town led by music of drums, flutes, and energetic calls. On the second and third day of the festival, a traditional game of a polo-like sport is played by horsemen teams at the stable of Shinra Jinja Shrine. Horsemen are divided into two teams The object of this game is to deliver the ball to the specified lot using a stick with a net attached at the end. This traditional sport is designated as the prefecture's intangible cultural asset.
