The Nanbu clan's territory stretched over a vast area
In 1333, Emperor Godaigo - after several attempts - finally succeeded in overthrowing the Kamakura Shogunate. This is a major event in history which is referred as the Kenmu Restoration. Soon after the change, reappointment of local officials took place. Nanbu Moroyuki was assigned to govern the Oshu (northeastern Japan) area. Nanbu, therefore, moved from the Kai region to Hachinohe and in 1334 established the Castle in Nejo as his headquarters for governing the Oshu region. But Japan's ruling court divided into north and south, conflicting with each other. Nanbu took sides with the south and fought to protect his castle. In 1392, the once divided court was unified under the Ashikaga Shogunate, and the Nanbu clan who successfully maintained their castle joined forces with their relatives who ruled Sannohe. Together they governed the whole Oshu region well into the Yedo period (1603 - 1867).
