Hanamaki is often associated with its hot springs, but perhaps the region's true symbol is Miyazawa Kenji. His deep love for the environment of Ihatov (or Iwate prefecture), his researches of geology, biology, astrology, and the several hundreds of children's tales and poems such as "The Restaurant of Many Orders" that he wrote made Miyazawa Kenji one of the nation's most famous people. At the age of 30 Miyazawa retired from his teaching position at the Hanamaki Agricultural School and founded the Rasuchijin Association. Through this organization, he taught farming to poverty-stricken farmers. But his passion for writing and the hard work in the fields began to eat away his health. Miyazawa became seriously ill at 32 and expressed his sorrow in the famous work, "Undaunted by rain, undaunted by wind." Miyazawa died at 37, anonymous at the time, but his spiritual works later impressed many people and have received awards in many different countries.
