Hirosaki-jo castle

Tsugaru Tamenobu: the cause for Hirosaki's prosperity

The castle town of Hirosaki was established when Tsugaru clan's founder, Oura Tamenobu, moved his resident castle. During the late 16th century, the Nanbu family ruled the Tsugaru region. Under Nanbu's rule, the Oura family gradually gained power. Eventually, castles owned by Nanbu's men were invaded by Tamenobu's people. And in 1590 Toyotomi Hideyoshi (who led the nation at the time) appointed the Oura family to rule the Tsugaru region. Thus the birth of the Tsugaru clan. Tamenobu moved his residence from Oura-jo castle (the west bank of Iwaki-gawa River) to Horikoshi (the east bank of Iwaki-gawa River). He also planned construction of a new castle and castle town in Takaoka (the current Hirosaki) to avoid damage from flooding. Unfortunately, Takaoka died during his trip to Kyoto, and second generation Nobuhira took over. In 1611 construction of Hirosaki-jo castle was completed, and during the same year the clan's troop members, temples, and merchants moved in. This set the basic organization of a castle town. Many of the town names given during this historic period are still in use today.
