Noshiro Nebu-nagashi, originates in an event of setting afloat burning lanterns on the Yoneshiro-gawa River to pray for a rich harvest and purification of an epidemic, which became an annual event in August. The lantern had become bigger and more sophisticated. In the Yedo period (1603 - 1867) a lantern in the shape of a castle, which imitated Nagoya-jo Castle with shachi or dolphin-like ornaments on top of the roof, appeared, and its splendid model became very popular. There used to be a giant lantern with a maximum size of 16 meters high and 5.4 meters wide in the old days, but nowadays as too many obstacles such as edges of house eaves and telephone poles as well as wires prevent such a huge lantern to be carried around a street. That results in a standard size of 3 meters high and 4 meters wide. A parade of such a big lantern with the flute music and drums is really magnificent. Anyone who sees this piece of art illuminating the mid-summer night would be fascinated and enjoy its lingering imagery of the festival.
